Have you ever walked down the street, listening to a book or podcast, and had tears streaming down your face? If so, we're in the same club. Inspired by Dani Saveker and her Visual Synopsis, I started it last week and am floored by how much I am taking in, and how much my heart is opening to those around me, including those it's very easy for me to judge. Belonging is at the center of it all. And at the center of all of us. And as we look back toward our ancestors, we can see how their own desires for safety, love, and belonging, lead them down the various paths they chose. Sometimes that path included seeking belonging through othering. But true belonging doesn't stem from being part of a group - it comes from first belonging to ourselves. Which brings me back to these words from Maya Angelou: You are only free when you realize you belong no place - you belong every place - no place at all. The price is high. The reward is great.
