I wasn't sure what to expect when I used my Audible credit for this one. It was recommended to me by Danielle Kayal , SPHR, ACC to read as part of our Emerge Leadership Book Circle, and although it wasn't chosen, I still was intrigued. It reminded me of Brené Brown's saying, "People are hard to hate close up. MOVE IN." (from her book Braving the Wilderness) In our polarized world, I wonder how much we spend judging people from afar, as opposed to getting closer to them, and truly knowing them. I know I do my fair share of judging others without truly KNOWING them. In the book, Brook's takes us through a journey into illuminators and diminishers, what it means to truly accompany someone, how to practice empathy, the challenge of supporting a dear friend with depression, and so much more. I am almost done, but will go back and READ it again, rather than simply listen to it. If you are a leader looking to really KNOW your team, a son/daughter wanting to know your parents before they pass, or merely a human who wants to see the humanity in all of us, I recommend taking the time to read or listen to this book.
