Thinking Outside The Brain

When I first read The Extended Mind by Annie Murphy Paul with a group last year, I didn't connect just how much my own thinking has been shaped by this book.

I am so glad to be diving into it again with a business development team at an organization.

As I re-read and create sketchnotes of the chapters, I can see how much the ideas are present in my work and world.

Here are a few ideas that are directly tied to my work:

  • Low to moderate activity stimulates ideas in new ways, that high intensity exercise just can't give you. (I go for 2-3 long walks in nature each week and leave my phone at home.)
  • Working near windows and natural light greatly enhances productivity and lowers stress. (I have 2 huge windows in my office)
  • Fidgeting allows you to focus better when listening to others. (I cap, twist, and recap my pens or doodle while on Zoom calls.)
  • Creating visual representations of ideas support your memory long term, and allows you to see the ideas in new ways. (I started sketch noting after reading the book the first time.)
  • Surrounding your desk space with items that connect with your identity gives you more confidence and sense of purpose. (My desk is surrounded by books, photos of family, art projects, etc.)
  • Indoor plants improve attention and productivity (I bought 2 new desk plants after reading the book.)
  • Awe is a reset button for the brain. (My office looks out on the mountains so I can lift my eyes from the screen and instantly tap into awe. Since having this view, my business has expanded 30% each year.)

If you want to enhance your ability to think, or to enhance the thinking of your team, I highly encourage you to read this book.

Where do come up with your best ideas?

    Hi there!

    I am Theresa Destrebecq.

I am a passionate learner and leader who loves books, so I started a company that brings book-learning to companies to make it more social and transformational.

It's about moving beyond just consuming ideas in isolation, to connecting those ideas to yourself, your colleagues, and your work.
