WHAT I'M (RE)READING WEDNESDAY : Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara

When I was still working in a traditional classroom setting, I would stand at the door and greet each of my students with a smile and their name.

I also used to bake cakes for each of their birthdays.

It was something that I learned early, in my student teaching days.

Many of my students came from challenging environments -- poverty, violence, drugs, to name a few.

For many of them, school was a place of refuge, and I took it upon myself to be their safe harbor - a place where they could momentarily forget the waves and storms that brewed around them.

There were times when I had to throw out my lesson plans, and make space for them to talk about the storms.

Like the time one of their classmates was killed in a drive by shooting.
Or the time that another was subpoenaed as a witness in a murder.

Will Guidara's book about fine dining seems to be in another world completely.

A place where my former students couldn't even fathom.

Yet, he comes from the same mindset that I did -- people want and need to be seen and feel welcomed.

Using his experience of transforming 11 Madison Park from a struggling French brasserie to the best restaurant in the world, he outlines exactly what it took to get there.

It wasn't about the food.

It was about how he put the people first -- not just the clients, but the employees.

Everyone mattered.
Belonging for him wasn't a perk. It was a practice.

Whether you've read the book or not, next week, I am teaming up with Laura Dietze to offer a workshop where we transfer the lessons from the book, to the non-restaurant world.

How can we create a sense of belonging from the first hello, to the first day a beyond?

How can we be unreasonably hospitable at work?

If you're a team lead, an HR professional, a facilitator or trainer, this is for you and we would love to see you there.

    Hi there!

    I am Theresa Destrebecq.

I am a passionate learner and leader who loves books, so I started a company that brings book-learning to companies to make it more social and transformational.

It's about moving beyond just consuming ideas in isolation, to connecting those ideas to yourself, your colleagues, and your work.
