We live in a polarized world. We live in a world where we are often forced to take a side. As a result, it's easy to put people into boxes. Yet, when we put people into boxes, it's often all we see. We forget to see the humanity inside that box. Coates' book is controversial because it's about oppression. Enslavement. Silencing voices. Theft. Colonization. Apartheid. Today, and also dating back thousands of years. Millions of lives cut short. When I listened to The Message the phrase that kept coming to mind was "Hurt people hurt people."
