Most of us have worked for "diminishers" -- those managers who seem to suck the life out of us, and make us feel and work less competently than we can or should. What many of us fail to realize is our own diminisher tendancies. (Hand raised here.) Liz Wiseman calls these moments, or us in general, "accidental diminishers." It's like we have bad breath, but don't notice. We diminish others, but don't even realize we're doing it. They are blind spots, that only self-awareness can uncover. These accidental diminisher behaviors include: 💚 Having so many ideas that you squash the ideas from everyone else. 💛 Being so overly "we can do this" that you fail to recognize the emotional struggle some might feel. 💙 Coming in to the rescue and not allowing your team to learn better through struggle 🩷 Setting a pace that is so fast, that your team can't keep up with you 💜 Never turning yourself off, modeling behavior that your team can't keep up with, leading to burnout and high levels of fatigue 🩵 Responding the small request or small fires in such a timely manner, that you take the responsibility and ownership away from those you lead. Next month, I am excited to be hosting a masterclass with Fiona Cameron (She/Her), where we'll be exploring these behaviors together. We would love it if you could join us.
