WHAT I'M READING WEDNESDAY : Defy by Dr. Sunita Sah

For thousands of years, women have needed to comply to survive.
Many of us still do today.

As I watch the global politics from my town of 4000 people, it's easy for me to say, "I would never," when it comes to certain decisions to comply.

Yet, when put to the test, would I ?

Would I have stood up to the researcher in Stanley Milgram's study?
Would I have risked my life to save my neighbor from the Nazis?

I am preparing for an upcoming trip to the United States, and in doing so, I have chosen to delete certain messages on my phone.

I have also changed the names of friends, to their initials.

Is this an act of compliance or an act of defiance?

I think Dr. Sah's book couldn't be more well-timed given what's happening in our world.

Yet, it's not as simple as comply or defy.

There is also CONSENT.

A word that many of us know due to the prevalence of violence against women.

Dr. Sah writes that it's possible to comply with something, without actually consenting.

As a mother, I think about how often my children comply without consenting.

I wonder if I am raising them well.

Am I expecting them to blindly comply?
Am I teaching them how and when to defy?

There is so much in this book to uncover and learn, and I am just at the beginning.

I will be ordering a paper copy next.

It's definitely a book that I would love to explore as part of a book circle. 😉

Thank you, Caroline Wynn for mentioning it yesterday. Clearly, I couldn't put it down.
