The Book I Didn't Want To Like, But Actually Love.

I don't know who recommended The Next Conversation by Jefferson Fisher, but there it was, ready for me to claim at the library.

I made a pact to myself to read less books by white men from the US.

Jefferson Fisher isn't just a white man from the US, he's from Texas as well. 🤣

Despite my pact and my reservations, I put my stereotypes and judgments aside and gave it a go.

Much to my surprise, it's probably one of the best, and most practical books on communication that I have ever read. (And you know that I read a lot.)

What I particularly appreciate is that it's not a journalist's perspective on how to communicate better.

He didn't research and talk to psychologists and other experts about what makes great communication great.

He lives it in his work as a lawyer, dealing with other lawyers, while also supporting his clients to speak confidently and respectfully when those opposing lawyers want to trap them to "win."

I'm not quite done yet, but I've already suggested it in a proposal to a client for a book to explore in 2026.

Thanks, Jefferson Fisher for making me eat my assumptions.

    Hi there!

    I am Theresa Destrebecq.

I am a passionate learner and leader who loves books, so I started a company that brings book-learning to companies to make it more social and transformational.

It's about moving beyond just consuming ideas in isolation, to connecting those ideas to yourself, your colleagues, and your work.
