Reading a book isn't learning. Listening to a podcast isn't learning. Attending a webinar or speaker isn't learning. As the late Richard Wagamese said: "Knowledge is NOT Wisdom. Wisdom is knowledge in action." Yesterday, someone asked me about my most controversial idea about learning. The three lines above is what I started with. In my work, I talk about the three Cs -- consuming, connecting, and creating. The problem that many of us have is that we stop at the first C. We consume tons of ideas in the hope of learning something useful. And maybe we do read, or hear something of interest, but it only becomes learning once we take action on it. When we connect with ideas more deeply, we can see how the original idea fits within our context. From there we can test, learn, re-test and relearn, how the idea fits for us. That's when we create new habits, behaviors, and ways of living and leading. Consuming is scalable. There are always more books. More podcasts. More video courses. Yet that constant consumption isn't leading us anywhere. It's become entertainment and a relief from boredom. That's not learning. Learning happens when we connect the ideas to ourselves, our colleagues, and our context. That requires space, time, and community. Things that aren't scalable.
