I Don't Lead Book Discussions

10/13/2025

Recently, someone messaged me and referred to my work as "facilitating book discussions."

It made me realize that I need to more clear about my communication. 🤣

A book discussion is to do just that -- discuss books.
It's all theoretical.
It's all in the head.

Even if it's facilitated.

A book circle, is a long-term (6+ session) where we deep dive into the ideas in a book, so we can truly bring them to life.

It's an exploration.
A moment of experimentation.
It's playful and requires courage.

Book discussions are safe -- you can sit back and listen to others talk, especially if you didn't read.

Book circles are highly engaging and interactive, and connected learning spaces.
You can't be a passive learner or listener.
It doesn't matter if you read or not -- you are still part of the action.

Here's another metaphor.

👉 A book club is going to the playground with your kids and either sitting on the bench, or following them around in case they need you.

🩷 A book circle is going to the playground with your kids and following their lead, doing everything and anything they ask of you -- even if the tunnel's a little tight, even if it's not meant for adults, and even when it feels uncomfortable.

Even when I didn't want to engage in the playground antics, I was always glad when I did.

If you decide to join a long term book circle, or a one-off book lab, you'll be glad you joined the fun, rather than sitting at home with your book on the couch.

Thank you, Melissa Ryan for prompting this need for clarity!

    Hi there!

    I am Theresa Destrebecq.

I am a passionate learner and leader who loves books, so I started a company that brings book-learning to companies to make it more social and transformational.

It's about moving beyond just consuming ideas in isolation, to connecting those ideas to yourself, your colleagues, and your work.
