My grandmother grew up in the Southern US, where there is a well established protocol for just about every thing. Also known as, "Southern hospitality." Of course, my mother grew up with it, and then passed it down to me. Among those teachings was the art of writing a “Thank You” card. When I was a child, I resented it. I didn't see why a simple, verbal "Thank you" wasn't enough. My only motivation was the "MUST" of my mother. I had "mustivation" as Tasha Eurich calls it. Now I see it completely differently. In this fast-paced, always on, super noisy world, I want to slow down. I want to connect with people for real. I want to bring humanness back to humanity. Kindness back to humankind. What used to be a chore, is now a joy. I send out a couple of these "Thank You" postcards each week. Not for gifts given like when I was a child, but for moments of real connection. It often blows people's minds - in a good way. What small act could you do to show appreciation for the little things? Originally posted on LinkedIn with comments.
